Air Itam is a suburb of George Town, located on the hillside at the base of Penang Hill. It is famous for two major attractions: the Penang Hill funicular railway and the Kek Lok Si Temple — one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia.

  • Kek Lok Si Temple — The multi-tiered pagoda, the giant Kuan Yin statue, and multiple prayer halls; the temple complex is divided into sections connected by internal funiculars and buggies.

  • Penang Hill Funicular — Rail access to the summit of Penang Hill.

  • Visit Kek Lok Si — allow a couple of hours to explore the different levels.

  • Ride the Penang Hill funicular — cool mountain air and views; a common day plan is temple in the morning, lunch at Air Itam Market, then Penang Hill in the afternoon.
