Why visit Sibu Island?

Pulau Sibu (Sibu Island) is a small island off the southeast coast of Johor, about 20 km east of Tanjung Penawar (Desaru) in the South China Sea. It is part of an archipelago that includes nearby Pulau Besar, Pulau Tengah, and Pulau Rawa. Sibu is known for its calm, clear turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and laid-back island atmosphere.

Unlike the developed resort islands of Langkawi or Penang, Sibu remains relatively undeveloped and quiet. There are only a handful of resorts on the island, no ATMs, and limited connectivity — which is exactly the appeal. The island is a popular weekend getaway for Singaporeans and Johor Bahru residents seeking a quick tropical escape. The best season to visit is March to October; the northeast monsoon (November–February) brings rough seas and many resorts close.

  • Sibu Island beaches — The island has several beautiful coves with powdery white sand. The best are on the eastern and southern shores, accessible through the resorts.

  • Snorkelling — Coral reefs with parrotfish, clownfish, and sea anemones are found off the south and east coast. Some resorts have house reefs.

  • Jungle trek — A path cuts through the island's forested interior to the far side (about 30 minutes).

  • Pulau Sibu Tengah — A smaller, uninhabited island a short boat ride away, with a pristine beach.

  • Snorkelling — The main activity. Equipment can be rented from resorts. House reefs are accessible from the beach.

  • Fishing — Resorts can arrange fishing trips.

  • Beach volleyball and board games — Provided at resorts.

  • Sunset drinks — Watch the sun sink into the South China Sea from the resort beach bar.

Where to eat?

Meals are almost exclusively at your resort, where set meal packages (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are included or available. The food is generally simple Malaysian-Western fare — nasi goreng, fried noodles, grilled fish, and chicken chop. Some resorts host weekly barbecue dinners on the beach. Vegetarian options are limited; notify the resort in advance.

Where to drink?

Resort bars serve beer, wine, and cocktails (imported, so prices are higher than on the mainland). Fresh coconut water and fruit juices are available. Bring plenty of drinking water.
