About Kota Tinggi

Kota Tinggi ("High Fort" in Malay) is a historic town in southeastern Johor, about 45 km northeast of Johor Bahru. It is situated on the Johor River and is best known for its beautiful waterfalls, its firefly sanctuary, and its weekend market. The town has a fascinating history — it was once the capital of the Johor Sultanate in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the site where the legendary Hang Tuah is said to have died.

Modern Kota Tinggi serves as a stopover for travellers heading up the east coast to Mersing, as well as a weekend getaway for Johor Bahru families. The surrounding area is dominated by palm oil plantations, rubber estates, and fruit orchards. The climate is tropical, with the wettest months from November to February.
