Why visit?

Clervaux is a canton in northern Luxembourg, set within the rugged hills and deep river valleys of the Éislek (Oesling) region. The canton takes its name from its principal town, a picturesque settlement of around 5,200 people nestled in the Our valley, dominated by a medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop above the town. The surrounding landscape is characterised by dense forests, rolling plateaus, and the Our Natural Park, one of Luxembourg's most important protected areas.

The canton's star attraction is the Castle of Clervaux, which houses Edward Steichen's legendary photography exhibition "The Family of Man" — a UNESCO Memory of the World collection originally shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maurus adds a contemplative dimension to the town, while the Battle of the Bulge Museum recalls the fierce fighting that swept through the area in the winter of 1944–45.

Beyond its cultural landmarks, Clervaux is a base for outdoor enthusiasts, with extensive hiking trails through the Our Natural Park, cycling routes along the Clerve river, and winter snowshoeing in the Ardennes highlands. The canton's smaller communes offer quiet villages, traditional stone farmhouses, and a pace of life far removed from Luxembourg City.

When is the best time to visit?

May to September is the ideal window, with temperatures ranging from 15–25°C and long daylight hours for hiking and sightseeing. The Our Natural Park is at its most vibrant in late spring, when wildflowers carpet the forest clearings. Autumn brings spectacular foliage to the beech and oak forests, making it a rewarding time for photography and moderate hikes.

Winter can be cold, with occasional snowfall transforming the Ardennes into a quiet, atmospheric landscape — some trails are suitable for snowshoeing, though facilities are limited. The Family of Man exhibition at the castle draws visitors year-round. Local village fêtes and Christmas markets in December add seasonal charm.

How do you get around?

Clervaux town is compact and walkable, with the castle, abbey, and main amenities within a 15-minute walk. The train station lies 1 km north of the centre, on the Liège–Luxembourg line, with connections to Luxembourg City (approximately 1.5 hours) and to Belgian towns to the north.

Regional buses connect Clervaux to surrounding communes including Wincrange, Hosingen, and Troisvierges, as well as to Vianden and Wiltz. Services are infrequent outside peak hours. By car, the N18 runs through the canton, connecting to the N7 about 5 km east of town, which provides a direct route south to Ettelbruck and Luxembourg City. Roads are well-maintained but winding through the hills.

What should you eat?

Northern Luxembourg's cuisine is heartier than the capital's, reflecting its Ardennes setting. Bouneschlupp (green bean soup with potatoes and smoked bacon) is a cold-weather staple, while Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork collar with broad beans) appears on traditional restaurant menus throughout the canton.

Clervaux's restaurants serve Luxembourgish classics alongside French-influenced dishes. In smaller villages, expect simple but satisfying fare: grilled meats, potato dishes, and seasonal game such as wild boar and venison from the surrounding forests. Local bakeries sell Quetschentaart (plum tart) in autumn. Dining options are limited compared to the capital, so reservations are recommended for evening meals.

What is the culture like?

The centrepiece of Clervaux's cultural life is the Family of Man exhibition at the castle, a collection of 503 photographs by 273 artists from 68 countries, curated by Edward Steichen. Inaugurated in 1955 at MoMA in New York, it was installed in Clervaux Castle in 1994 and added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2003.

The Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maurus, perched above the town, is an active monastic community where visitors can attend Gregorian chant services. Local traditions include Buergbrennen (bonfire night on the first Sunday of Lent), village fêtes in summer, and Christmas markets in December. The Battle of the Bulge Museum commemorates the heavy fighting of winter 1944–45.
