About Kvedarna
Kvedarna (also spelled Kvedarna) is a quiet riverside village in southwestern Tauragė County, approximately 15 km southwest of Tauragė town. This small settlement holds outsized cultural and religious significance as the home of the Franciscan Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — one of Lithuania's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites. The Franciscans established a monastery here in the 18th century, and the complex (monastery, church, and grounds) has been a spiritual centre ever since, even surviving the Soviet period when the regime tried to suppress religious life. Kvedarna remains a living monastery with a small but devoted Franciscan community, and it attracts pilgrims particularly around the Feast of the Assumption (August 15). The peaceful rural setting, the cobblestone monastery courtyard, and the tangible sense of centuries of prayer make Kvedarna a genuinely special place, even for non-religious visitors interested in Lithuanian Catholic heritage and monastic architecture. Climate: temperate continental, best visited June–September.

Things to do
Franciscan Monastery of the Assumption — the heart of Kvedarna. The complex comprises a brick Baroque church (built mid-18th century) with a single tall tower, a two-storey monastery building arranged around a cobbled courtyard, and extensive gardens. The interior of the church has beautifully restored frescoes, a gilded high altar, and the miraculous painting of the Assumption that draws pilgrims. The monastery church is open daily; visitors are welcome to attend mass or simply walk the grounds in respectful silence.
Monastery Courtyard and Gardens — the cobblestone courtyard is surrounded by the monastery arcades, with a well in the centre and flowerbeds. Behind the monastery, the Franciscans maintain a vegetable garden and an orchard.
Chapel of the Spring (Šaltinio koplyčia) — a small wooden chapel about 500 m from the monastery, built over a natural spring believed to have healing waters. A short, contemplative walk from the main complex.
Kvedarna Village — a single street of traditional Samogitian wooden houses leads to the monastery, giving a sense of timeless rural Lithuania.
Attend a Pilgrimage Mass — on August 15 (Assumption of Mary), the monastery hosts thousands of pilgrims from across Lithuania and neighbouring Latvia. The outdoor mass, procession, and fair create a unique cultural experience.
Walk the Grounds and Pray the Rosary Path — a marked path with rosary stations around the monastery grounds, offering a peaceful forest meditation.
Silent Retreat Experience — the Franciscans accept individual visitors for silent retreats (advance arrangements required via the monastery contact).
Photograph the Monastery Architecture — the Baroque church, the monastic courtyard, and the setting sun over the gardens make for exceptional photographs.
