Tahala

Tahala is a small Tuareg settlement on the Libyan–Algerian border in the Ghāt district, approximately 70 km west of Ghat. It sits at the foot of the Tassili N'Ajjer plateau, overlooking the dry Wadi Tahala. The village is a traditional gateway for caravans and travellers crossing between Libya and Algeria's Djanet region. Tahala is extremely remote, with a handful of families and no tourist services.

Ghat Airport (GHT IATA) is approximately 90 km east. A 4WD from the airport to Tahala takes about 2 hours.

From Ghat, the 70 km route to Tahala is an unsealed desert track requiring 4WD. The road continues to the Algerian border post (crossing requires pre-arranged permission). No public transport.

Walking is the only option within the village. 4WD is needed for exploration of the surrounding area.

Visitors staying in Tahala are hosted by local families and share their meals — typically bread, couscous, and goat meat.

Tea is always offered to guests. Water must be carried in.

Tahala has no formal accommodation. Visitors must arrange homestays with local families in advance through a Ghat-based tour operator, or camp with permission from the village elders. Bring all camping equipment and supplies from Ghat.

Tahala has no shops. All supplies must be brought from Ghat, 70 km east.

• Serdeles (50 km southeast, 1 hour) — Another small Tuareg settlement and trekking base.
• Djanet, Algeria (unpaved track west, border crossing required) — Algerian oasis town known for its own Tassili rock-art sites.
