Al Kufrah is a vast popularate in southeastern Libya, covering a large expanse of the Sahara Desert and the Great Sand Sea. It is one of the most remote and isolated districts in Libya, centred on the Kufra Oasis, a cluster of settlements including Al Jawf (the capital), Tazirbu, Rebiana, and Buzema. The district is named after the Kufra Basin, a geological depression where groundwater-fed oases support date-palm agriculture. Kufra was the spiritual and political heartland of the Senussi order in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the Senussi zawiya in Al Jawf remains an important religious site. The landscape is extreme desert: the Great Sand Sea (Zallaf) occupies much of the north and east, while the southern part includes the Tibesti Mountains on the border with Chad. The climate is hyper-arid, with summer temperatures exceeding 50°C. Al Kufrah is also the administrative centre of Libya's oil-producing southeast.
When to Visit
November to March is the only viable travel window. Summer (May–October) is dangerously hot. Even in winter, bring warm clothing for cold desert nights. Sandstorms are possible in spring.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Travel to and within Al Kufrah is challenging. The only paved road is the highway from Ajdabiya (800 km north) to Al Jawf. From Al Jawf, tracks lead to Tazirbu, Rebiana, and Buzema — a 4WD is essential. Flights to Al Kufra Airport connect to Benghazi and Tripoli.

WhatsAppCuisine
Oasis cuisine: dates (the Kufra dates are famous), couscous, lamb, goat, and camel milk. Supplies are limited — most food is produced locally or brought from the coast.
Culture & Festivals
The Senussi Islamic heritage of Kufra is profound. The zawiya of the Grand Senussi in Al Jawf is a pilgrimage site. The local population includes both Arab and Tuareg communities, each with distinct traditions.
