Jaghbub
Al Buţnān, Libya
About Jaghbub
Jaghbub is a remote desert oasis town in southeastern Al Buţnān, located near the Egyptian border within the Great Sand Sea. It holds profound religious and historical significance as the spiritual birthplace of the Senussi Islamic order — the Grand Senussi, Muhammad ibn Ali as-Senussi, established his first zawiya (religious lodge) here in the mid-19th century, and the town became the movement's centre until the order shifted to Kufra. The oasis is also the burial place of the Grand Senussi, and his tomb is a site of pilgrimage. Jaghbub is one of Libya's most isolated settlements, accessible only by desert track, with a small population living around the palm groves and springs. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C; winters are warm by day and cool at night.

Things to do
Tomb of the Grand Senussi — The burial site of Muhammad ibn Ali as-Senussi, a white-domed shrine that is the spiritual heart of the Senussi order.
Senussi Zawiya — The historic religious lodge and school that once attracted students from across the Islamic world. Now partly ruined but still evocative.
Palm groves and springs — The oasis is fed by natural springs and shaded by thousands of date palms, creating a lush pocket in the surrounding desert.
Visit the Senussi shrine and learn about the history of the order from local caretakers.
Experience the stillness of the Great Sand Sea — the dunes surrounding Jaghbub are among Libya's most dramatic desert landscapes.
