Long San

Long San is a district in central Xaisômboun Province, located in the mountainous interior of central Laos. The area is sparsely populated with Hmong communities practising subsistence agriculture. The landscape is dominated by forested hills and valleys. The district is remote and access is challenging.

The climate is subtropical with cool temperatures at elevation. The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit. Roads can be difficult in the rainy season.

The nearest airport is Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane, approximately 170 km southwest.

Long San is accessible from Vang Vieng or Vientiane via local roads. The road is partially paved but rough in sections. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended. Local transport is limited and irregular.

Walking is the primary mode within the district centre. Motorbike taxis can be arranged for trips to surrounding villages. Local guides are recommended for exploring the area.

• Budget: Basic guesthouse with fan rooms from 40,000 LAK. Most travellers continue to Vang Vieng or Vientiane for more comfortable accommodation.

Basic provisions at small village shops. Hmong textiles may be available.

• Anouvong (50 km west, 1.5 hr) — District capital with basic services.
• Tha Thom (40 km south, 1 hr) — Another Xaisômboun district.
• Vang Vieng (100 km southwest, 2.5 hr) — Karst landscape with full tourism infrastructure.
• Vientiane (170 km southwest, 4 hr) — Capital city with airport and all services.
