Hongsa

Xaignabouli, Laos

Why visit Hongsa?

Hongsa is a district of Xaignabouli Province best known as the site of the Hongsa Mine Mouth Power Project, spanning Hongsa and neighboring Muang Nguen districts. The project combines one of Southeast Asia's largest lignite mines — producing about 14.3 million tonnes a year — with a 1,878 MW coal-fired power plant, making it the first and largest lignite-fired power station in Laos. It is owned by Banpu Power, RATCH Group, and Lao Holding State Enterprise, and its output is exported entirely to Thailand's Electricity Generating Authority via a roughly 67 km, 500-kilovolt transmission line. The first generating unit came online in 2015.
