About Dong Phou Vieng

Dong Phou Vieng is a national protected area in northern Savannakhét Province, covering approximately 1,970 km² of deciduous forest and grasslands. It protects habitat for wild cattle (gaur and banteng), Asian elephants, and numerous bird species. The area is accessible from Route 9.

The climate is tropical monsoon. November to April is the best time for wildlife viewing.

Nearest airport is Savannakhet (ZVK), about 100 km south.

The reserve is accessed from Route 9 near Phin or Route 13 near Atsaphangthong. A 4WD vehicle is recommended.
