About Sam Neua
Sam Neua (also spelled Sam Neua or Xam Neua) is the capital of Houaphan Province in northeastern Laos, situated in a scenic valley at approximately 1,000 metres elevation. The town is an important historical site, serving as the headquarters of the Pathet Lao movement during the Laotian Civil War. Nearby Vieng Xai is famed for its extensive cave network used as a secret headquarters by the Pathet Lao leadership. Sam Neua has a cool climate, a relaxed atmosphere, and a distinctly frontier feel.
The climate is subtropical highland with pleasant temperatures year-round. The cool dry season from November to February is the most comfortable. The rainy season from May to September brings heavy but usually brief downpours. The town centre is compact and walkable.
