Why visit Karatal-Japyryk?
Karatal-Japyryk is a nature reserve in Naryn Region, located about 100 km south of Naryn in the remote Ak-Say Valley, near the Kyrgyz border with China. The reserve encompasses a dramatic high-altitude landscape of glaciers, canyons, and alpine meadows at elevations exceeding 3,000 m.
The area is known for its striking red-rock canyons, turquoise glacial lakes, and pristine wilderness. It is one of the most remote and least-visited protected areas in Kyrgyzstan, offering true backcountry adventure. The reserve is only accessible in summer (July–August). The climate is severe with freezing temperatures possible even in summer.

By Car / Road
Access requires a 4WD vehicle from Naryn via At-Bashi and the Ak-Say Valley road — about 3–4 hours on rough tracks. Hiring a driver with a suitable vehicle from Naryn costs 4,000–7,000 som. A local guide is highly recommended. Permits may be required.
Exploration is on foot or by 4WD. The terrain is rugged with no established trails.

No food services. Self-cater with provisions from Naryn. Bring a camping stove and fuel as there are no cooking facilities. Dried noodles, canned goods, and bread are good options.
Where to drink?
Glacial stream water is available but requires purification (boiling, filters, or tablets). Bring bottled water for the first day or two. Carry at least 3 litres per person per day for hiking.

What should you buy?
No shops exist in the reserve. All supplies — food, fuel, camping equipment, and warm clothing — must be purchased in Naryn. Stock up at the Naryn bazaar before departure.
