Ar Riqqah

Ar Riqqah is a residential suburb located within Al Ahmadi Governorate, situated inland from the coast between Al Ahmadi town to the south and the Fahaheel Expressway corridor to the north. Unlike the beachside suburbs along Gulf Road, Ar Riqqah is entirely landlocked, consisting primarily of low-rise apartment buildings, villa compounds, and dedicated government housing projects. It was developed as part of Kuwait's urban expansion to accommodate the growing population of Kuwait Oil Company employees and other professionals working in the Al Ahmadi industrial zone. The suburb has a calm, family-oriented character, with wide streets, small parks, and a handful of local shops and services. It lacks touristic appeal but offers a genuine glimpse into everyday suburban life in Kuwait. The climate follows the same pattern as the rest of Kuwait: scorching summers and pleasant winters. The best time to visit is November through March.

Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is about 30 km northwest of Ar Riqqah, approximately 25 minutes via the Fahaheel Expressway. Taxi fare is KD 8–12.

Ar Riqqah is accessible via the Fahaheel Expressway (Route 30), taking the Ar Riqqah exit. From Kuwait City, it is about 35 km (25–30 minutes). From Al Ahmadi town centre, it is 5 km north. KPTC buses on the Kuwait City–Fahaheel–Al Ahmadi route pass near Ar Riqqah on the expressway, though the stop may be a 10–15 minute walk from residential areas.

Car is essential. The suburb is not pedestrian-friendly; distances between amenities are long and many streets lack pavements. Taxis are available by phone or app but may take time to arrive. There is no internal public transport.

• Ar Riqqah Park: A small neighbourhood park with green lawns, playgrounds, and shaded seating — a local gathering spot for families in the evenings.

• Ar Riqqah Central Mosque: A modest local mosque serving the community, with a typical modern Kuwaiti minaret.

• Al Ahmadi Water Towers (5 km south): The landmark blue-and-white water towers visible in the distance from Ar Riqqah's elevated areas.

• Nearby KOC facilities: The Kuwait Oil Company headquarters and the surrounding "oil city" landscape is visible from the expressway.

• Visit Al Ahmadi city centre (5 km south): Parks, the KOC Exhibition, and shopping.

• Drive to Fahaheel beach (8 km east): The coastal area offers beach access and the Al Kout Mall for dining and entertainment.

• Shopping at the Ar Riqqah Co-op: A typical Kuwaiti neighbourhood co-operative supermarket good for observing local daily life.

• Desert drives: The open areas west of Ar Riqqah offer short desert excursions for 4x4 enthusiasts.

• Ar Riqqah Restaurant Complex: A small strip of eateries near the co-op serving Kuwaiti grills, biryani, and shawarma. Budget.
• Al Ahmadi restaurants (5 km south): A wider choice including Danat Al Ahmadi for Kuwaiti cuisine and various fast-food outlets. Budget to mid-range.
• Fahaheel (8 km east): Al Kout Mall food court and independent seafood restaurants.
• Falafel and shawarma kiosks: Several roadside stands operate in the area, serving cheap sandwiches.

Alcohol is not available. Fresh juice shops and karak chai stalls operate near the co-op area. Bottled water is widely available at the co-op and grocery shops.
