Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City

Why visit Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City?

Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City is a large-scale, master-planned waterfront resort and residential development on Kuwait's southern coastline in Al Ahmadi Governorate. Named after the 15th Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the city is a visionary project built around a network of man-made lagoons, canals, and artificial islands inspired by similar developments in Dubai and the Netherlands. The development covers roughly 26 square kilometres and features over 200 km of engineered waterfront, with residential villas, apartment blocks, beach clubs, and recreational facilities built along the lagoons. Construction began in the early 2000s and the city is being developed in multiple phases. It functions as a beachside resort community and weekend getaway destination for Kuwaiti families, offering a rare opportunity for waterfront living in a country with limited natural coastline. The heat is extreme in summer, but the sea breeze provides some relief. The peak season runs from November to April.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is about 70 km north of Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City, approximately a 50-minute drive via Route 70 south. A taxi from the airport costs KD 15–20.

By Car / Road

A private car is essential. From Kuwait City, take the Fahaheel Expressway south past Al Ahmadi, then continue on Route 70 (Al Wafrah Road). Sea City is signposted from the road, with the main entrance gate about 60 km south of Kuwait City. From Al Khiran, it is a 10-minute drive north.

Within the development, a car or bicycle is needed to get around. The residential and resort areas are spread across a large area connected by roads. There are no public buses or internal shuttles. Many villa compounds and hotels provide buggy services within their own premises. Walking is possible along the canal-side promenades but impractical for covering the full development.

What are the things to do?

  • The Lagoon System: The man-made saltwater lagoons are the centrepiece of the development, with canals winding between residential islands and lined with palm trees. Boat tours are available.

  • Sea City Beach: A broad artificial beach with imported white sand, calm lagoon waters, and designated swimming areas. Access may be restricted to residents and hotel guests.

  • The Marina: A small marina with berths for leisure boats and jet skis.

  • Waterfront villas and architecture: The modern Arabian Gulf–style villas and apartment blocks with their consistent architectural theme are worth a look.

  • Sunset over the lagoons: The canals and water channels face west, providing spectacular sunset reflections over the water.

  • Swimming and water sports: The lagoon beaches offer swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and jet ski rentals during the season.

  • Boat tours: A guided boat tour through the canal network provides the best perspective on the development's scale and design.

  • Fishing: The lagoons and the open sea nearby offer fishing opportunities.

  • Beach club access: Several private beach clubs and resort pools operate within the development — day passes may be available.

  • Cycling: The flat, car-light roads within the development are suitable for cycling, especially in the winter months.

  • Dining at the lagoon-front cafés: Several cafés and restaurants overlook the water.
