Ferizaj City

Ferizaj District, Kosovo

Why visit Ferizaj City?

Ferizaj (Albanian) or Uroševac (Serbian) is the largest city in southern Kosovo and the capital of Ferizaj District. With a population of roughly 100,000, it sits at 500 m elevation on a plateau between Pristina and the Sharr Mountains. The city grew rapidly after the 1999 conflict, when displaced communities from across southern Kosovo settled here, and it continues to expand with new construction and a youthful population.

The city centre features a mix of Ottoman-era buildings, Yugoslav-era apartment blocks, and post-independence construction. The Grand Bazaar area (Çarshia e Madhe) retains some of the old market character, though much has been modernised. A new pedestrian boulevard and several cafés give the centre a relaxed feel, particularly in the evenings when locals gather for coffee and strolling.

Ferizaj has a continental climate: cold winters with occasional snow (December–February), hot summers reaching 35 °C (June–August). Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, with mild temperatures ideal for walking and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Ferizaj's food scene is dominated by traditional Balkan Albanian cuisine. Te Sylejmani is a well-regarded restaurant serving grilled meats, flija, and traditional dishes in a family setting (mains €4–8). Restorant Pishat offers a broader menu including seafood alongside grilled meats (mains €5–10). For casual eating, the cafés along the main boulevard serve burek (filled pastry, €1–2), qofte plates, and strong Turkish coffee. Where to drink?

Turkish coffee (kafe turke) is the default social drink, served everywhere from formal cafés to roadside stalls. Fruit juices and ajvar (pepper-based drink) are common non-alcoholic options. Alcoholic drinks are available at restaurants and some bars but are less prominent in the culture; Titanik Bar and Art Caffe are popular evening spots for younger locals. Tap water in Ferizaj is generally safe but has a strong mineral taste; bottled water is widely available and cheap.
