Overview

Migori County lies in southwestern Kenya, bordering Lake Victoria to the west and Tanzania to the south. It is a region of rolling green hills, sugarcane plantations, and lakeside fishing villages. The county is primarily inhabited by the Luo people, with significant Gusii and Somali minority communities. Migori town is the administrative and commercial centre.

The county offers a mix of cultural and natural attractions: the prehistoric dry-stone settlement of Thimlich Ohinga (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the shores of Lake Victoria with their fishing communities, and the wildlife of nearby Ruma National Park. Migori serves as a gateway to the Maasai Mara via the C13 road and provides an authentic glimpse into rural Kenyan life away from the main tourist circuit.

When to Visit

The best time is during the dry months of June to September and January to February. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–November) can make roads muddy. The lakeside areas remain warm year-round, while the highlands are cooler.

Getting Around

Migori town is connected to Nairobi by direct bus services and flights. The A1 highway runs through the county, linking Migori to Kisumu to the north and the Tanzanian border at Isebania to the south. Matatus (minibuses) connect Migori to Kehancha, Rongo, Awendo, Muhuru Bay, and Sori. Motorbike taxis (boda-bodas) are ubiquitous for local travel. Roads to lakeside villages can be rough and 4WD is advisable during the rainy season.

Cuisine

Luo cuisine is central to Migori's food culture. Fish from Lake Victoria — Nile perch and tilapia — is grilled, fried, or sun-dried (omena). Nyama choma (roasted goat or beef) is a social staple. Ugali (maize porridge) accompanies most meals, served with sukuma wiki (kale) or fish stew. Sugarcane is grown extensively, and fresh sugarcane juice is a popular drink.

Culture & Festivals

The Luo people dominate the lakeside areas, known for their fishing traditions, vibrant music (benga), and storytelling. The Kuria people in the south have distinct initiation ceremonies and cattle-keeping traditions. Thimlich Ohinga, a 16th-century dry-stone settlement, is a major cultural landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Funerals and weddings are significant social gatherings with large communal feasts.
