Kajiado

Kajiado County stretches from the southern outskirts of Nairobi south to the Tanzanian border. It is Maasai country, characterised by vast open plains, rolling hills, and the Ngong Hills escarpment on its western edge. The county surrounds but does not include Nairobi. It contains Amboseli National Park — one of Kenya's most iconic parks with huge elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro — as well as the soda lake of Magadi and the border town of Namanga.

The dry months of June to October and January to March offer the best wildlife viewing, especially in Amboseli. The long rains (April–June) make roads muddy but the landscape turns green.

Major roads include the A104 (Nairobi–Namanga road) and roads from Nairobi to Ngong, Kajiado, and Magadi. Matatus run frequently from Nairobi to all major towns.

• Loitokitok — town near the Tanzanian border, gateway to eastern Amboseli.
• Namanga — border town on the Nairobi–Arusha road.
• Isinya — agricultural centre in central Kajiado.
• Magadi — town on the shores of Lake Magadi, a caustic soda lake.
• Amboseli National Park — world-famous park with elephants and iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Maasai cuisine features roasted meat (nyama choma), fresh and fermented milk, and blood mixed with milk. Town restaurants serve Kenyan staples, Nyama choma is excellent in the Maasai areas.

The Maasai are the dominant community, known for their distinctive red shuka dress, intricate beadwork, jumping dances, and pastoralist traditions. The Maasai Olympics and manyatta visits offer cultural insight.
