Kimilili

Kimilili is an agricultural town on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon in north-eastern Bungoma County. It is one of the closest settlements to the mountain and a good base for exploring the Elgon foothills. The area grows maize, sunflowers, and sugarcane in its fertile volcanic soils, and the climate is warm and pleasant year-round. The town is predominantly inhabited by the Bukusu people.

By Car / Road

Kimilili is on the road from Bungoma to Mount Elgon, about 30 km north-east of Bungoma. Matatus run from Bungoma town. A private vehicle is recommended for exploring the mountain.

Local restaurants serve ugali, sukuma wiki, and nyama choma.

Fresh sugarcane juice and chai are local favourites.

Basic guesthouses near the market area offer simple rooms from around Ksh 800 per night.

• Mount Elgon National Park (~20 km north-east) — hike to the caldera and visit the salt caves.
• Bungoma (~30 km south-west) — county capital with market and transport links.
• Kapsokwony (~10 km north) — last town before the park gate.
