Mount Elgon National Park

Bungoma, Kenya

Why visit Mount Elgon National Park?

Mount Elgon National Park protects the Kenyan side of Mount Elgon, a massive dormant volcano straddling the Kenya-Uganda border. The park covers approximately 169 square kilometres on the Kenyan side, encompassing montane forest, bamboo zones, and high-altitude moorland up to the caldera rim at around 4,000 metres. The mountain itself is one of the oldest in East Africa, with a caldera that ranks among the world's largest intact volcanic craters.

The park is renowned for three things: its cave systems (most famously Kitum Cave, where elephants and buffalo enter to mine salt), its diverse birdlife (over 300 recorded species), and its relatively uncrowded hiking trails. Unlike Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro, Elgon sees far fewer trekkers, offering a wilderness experience that feels genuinely remote. The mountain's slopes support a range of wildlife, including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, duikers, and the occasional leopard, while the lower forests are excellent for birdwatching.

The climate varies with altitude — warm and wet at the lower gates, cool and often misty at higher elevations. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons of December–February and July–August, when trails are less muddy and visibility is better. However, the mountain can be visited year-round if adequate rain gear is carried.

By Car / Road

The park gate is approximately 5 km north of Kapsokwony, which is itself 55 km north of Bungoma town. The road from Bungoma is paved as far as Kimilili, then gravel to Kapsokwony and the park gate. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended. The final section to the gate can be rough and slippery after rain. No public transport runs to the gate; a private vehicle or taxi from Bungoma/Kapsokwony is necessary.

The park is explored on foot. There are no roads within the park. All visits require a guided trek — independent hiking is not permitted. Treks range from single-day walks to the caves and viewpoints up to 3–4 day expeditions to the caldera and peaks (Koitobos Peak at 4,321 metres is the highest point in the Kenyan section). Guides are available at the park headquarters and are highly recommended for safety and ecological interpretation.

What are the things to do?

  • Kitum Cave — The most famous of Mount Elgon's caves. Elephants and buffalo enter the cave to mine salt, creating a unique spectacle. The cave extends approximately 200 metres into the mountain.

  • Makingeny Cave — Another significant cave, larger than Kitum but less visited.

  • Caldera rim — The massive caldera, roughly 8 km in diameter, is one of the world's largest intact volcanic craters. Reached on multi-day treks.

  • Koitobos Peak — The highest accessible point on the Kenyan side (4,321 m). Stunning views toward the Ugandan side of the mountain.

  • Waterfalls — Several waterfalls cascade down the mountain's forested slopes, particularly after rain.

  • Multi-day trekking — The classic Mount Elgon experience. Routes typically take 3–4 days, with overnight stays in huts or camps within the park. Guides, porters, and park fees apply.

  • Cave exploration — Guided day walks to Kitum Cave and other caves. The best time to see elephants in the cave is during the dry season.

  • Birdwatching — Over 300 bird species, including the African crowned eagle, turaco species, and various forest birds. The lower montane forest is particularly good for birding.

  • Day hikes — Shorter walks of 2–5 hours are possible to viewpoints, caves, and waterfalls near the park gate.

  • Camping — The park has designated campsites for those wanting a more immersive experience.
