Maan

Ma'an, Jordan

Why visit Maan?

Ma'an is a city in southern Jordan and the capital of the Ma'an Governorate, one of the largest governorates by area in the country. Located approximately 220 km south of Amman on the Desert Highway, Ma'an has historically served as an important crossroads and trading post on routes connecting Amman to Aqaba and the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia.

The city has a population of around 40,000 and sits at an elevation of approximately 1,050 m on a high desert plateau. The climate is arid with hot summers and cool winters; temperatures can drop significantly at night due to the elevation. Ma'an played a role in the Arab Revolt of 1916–1918, when it was captured by forces led by Sharif Hussein bin Ali.

Ma'an serves primarily as a transport hub and gateway to southern Jordan's major attractions, including Petra (Wadi Musa), Wadi Rum, and the port city of Aqaba. The city itself has limited tourist attractions but offers basic services for travellers passing through.
