Al-Jafr
Ma'an, Jordan
Why visit Al-Jafr?
Al-Jafr is a small town in the Ma'an Governorate of southern Jordan, situated in the eastern desert plateau. The town is notable for its proximity to Al-Jafr Lake (Jafir Lake), a rare body of water in the arid Jordanian desert that forms seasonally after winter rains and attracts migratory birds.
The town sits at an elevation of approximately 850 m and experiences an arid desert climate with very hot summers and cool winters. Rainfall is scarce, but when it does rain, the low-lying areas around Al-Jafr can fill with water, creating temporary wetlands in the desert landscape.
Al-Jafr has a small population and serves as a local centre for the surrounding Bedouin communities. The area is known for its striking desert scenery and has potential for eco-tourism and birdwatching when the lake is filled.
