Why visit Chichibu?
Chichibu (秩父市) is a mountain city in the far west of Saitama Prefecture, about an hour and a half from central Tokyo yet a world away in feel. Where the rest of the prefecture is commuter sprawl, Chichibu is a basin town ringed by forested peaks, and almost entirely contained within Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. It is best known for two things: blazing autumn foliage, and the Chichibu Yomatsuri, a December night festival that draws crowds from across Japan.
The city has a long spiritual history. It is the heart of a circuit of 34 temples dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy and compassion, traditionally walked as a pilgrimage. Its main shrine, Chichibu Shrine, carries ornate carvings commissioned by Tokugawa Ieyasu and executed by the same sculptor responsible for the celebrated Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. The surrounding district adds river gorges, shibazakura flower fields and a beloved steam train, giving Chichibu a strong appeal as both a day trip and an overnight base.
Chichibu's mountain setting brings cool, fresh air, hot and humid summers, and cold winters with snow on the higher ground. The standout seasons are spring, when the phlox carpets Hitsujiyama Park, autumn for foliage, and early December for the night festival. The compact city centre clusters around Seibu-Chichibu and Chichibu stations, with sights such as Nagatoro spread along the rivers nearby.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Train
The Seibu Chichibu Line (西武秩父線) from Ikebukuro is the quickest route from Tokyo. From Seibu Ikebukuro Station you can take a cheaper local train, changing at Hanno, or pay a surcharge for the faster, more comfortable Limited Express "Red Arrow", which is direct with no transfer. If you have time, the food hall in the basement of the Seibu department store at Ikebukuro is a good place to grab a meal to eat on the train, as local commuters do. Alternatively, take a JR Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno to Kumagaya (about 45 minutes) and transfer to the Chichibu Railway into Chichibu.
By Car / Road
Chichibu is reached by mountain road from the Tokyo direction via Hanno and Tokorozawa, or from the north via Yorii and Kumagaya. Roads into the basin are winding mountain routes; allow extra time and use snow tyres in winter.
The city centre around Seibu-Chichibu and Chichibu stations is walkable. For the temple pilgrimage and the wider district, a bicycle is a particularly good way to combine temple visits with scenery, and local buses and the Chichibu Railway reach outlying spots such as Nagatoro. Suica and Pasmo IC cards work on the Seibu line. Japan has no tuk-tuks or touts; the practical advice is to plan around mountain bus timetables, which can be sparse.
What are the things to do?
Shrines
- Chichibu Shrine (秩父神社) — An old shrine with colourful, ornate carvings commissioned by Tokugawa Ieyasu by the same sculptor who worked on Nikko's Toshogu Shrine; host of the famous Chichibu Night Festival each December.
- Hijiri Shrine (聖神社) — Notable for its large wado kaichin coins, recalling Japan's first standardised coinage.
Parks
Hitsujiyama Park (羊山公園) — A large park famous for its shibazakura (phlox) that carpet the slopes in late spring.
Chichibu Temple Pilgrimage — A circuit of 34 temples dedicated to Kannon in and around the city; traditionally walked, though completing it on foot takes more than a few days. A bicycle is a wonderful way to visit some of the temples while also seeing the surrounding countryside.
Chichibu Night Festival (Chichibu Yomatsuri) — Held every year on 2–3 December, with the main parade of great floats on the 3rd; one of Japan's most celebrated night festivals.
Nagatoro (長瀞) — Sail down the Ara River on a traditional wooden boat through the beautiful gorge scenery of nearby Nagatoro.
SL Paleo Express (SL パレオエクスプレス) — Travel through the district aboard a working steam locomotive on the Chichibu Railway.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Chichibu's food is mountain-town cooking, with soba a particular speciality.
- Budget / Mid-range: Oomura (大むら), Miyakawacho 17-3, near Seibu-Chichibu Station on Route 299 opposite the hospital; open 11:30–15:00 and 17:00–20:00. A friendly soba restaurant also known for very good tonkatsu pork cutlets and a generous mimosa salad topped with fried shrimp.
Where to drink?
Chichibu lies in sake country and the area is known within Japan for craft brewing and distilling, so locally made drinks are worth seeking out in shops and bars near the stations. Green tea and coffee shops serve daytime visitors. Tap water throughout the city is safe to drink. Nightlife is low-key, centred on small izakaya near the station rather than any large entertainment district.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
- Budget: Simple guesthouses and minshuku in and around the city offer the most economical rooms.
- Mid-range: Mid-range hotels and inns near Seibu-Chichibu Station serve as a convenient base for the festival and the surrounding mountains.
- Upscale: Hot-spring ryokan in the wider Chichibu district offer more comfortable stays.
What should you buy?
Chichibu's mountain and river setting yields local foods and crafts — Saitama is known for sake, and the Chichibu area has its own brewing and craft traditions, with seasonal sweets and souvenirs sold around the stations and near the temples. Prices are fixed and bargaining is not customary in Japan; carry some cash for smaller shops in this rural area.
Where to go next?
