Half Way Tree
Saint Andrew, Jamaica
About Half Way Tree
Half Way Tree is the commercial and transport heart of uptown Kingston, located in the southern part of Saint Andrew parish. Named for a historic cotton tree that stood at the midpoint between Kingston and Spanish Town, it is now a bustling urban crossroads where most of the island's public transport routes converge. The Half Way Tree Transport Centre, rebuilt in 2003, is the most modern transit hub in Jamaica and the main jumping-off point for destinations across the island.
The surrounding neighbourhood is a dense mix of government buildings, shopping plazas, street vendors, fast-food restaurants, and the headquarters of several Jamaican media companies. Hope Road, running southeast from Half Way Tree toward Kingston, is lined with cultural landmarks including Devon House, the Bob Marley Museum, and the Jamaica House (the Prime Minister's residence). The area is safe for walking during the day, though standard urban precautions apply after dark.
