Valtournenche
Valle d'Aosta, Italy
About Valtournenche
Valtournenche is a traditional alpine town and valley situated at an elevation of 1,524 metres in the northern Aosta Valley. The town lies in a scenic, steep-sided valley carved by the Marmore river, leading up to the world-famous resort of Breuil-Cervinia and the iconic Matterhorn (known in Italy as Monte Cervino).
Valtournenche has a storied history in the annals of mountaineering. It was the birthplace of many legendary alpine guides, including Jean-Antoine Carrel, who made the first ascent of the Matterhorn from the Italian side in 1865. The town has preserved its authentic, rustic character, featuring historic stone-and-wood buildings, traditional farms, and a quiet mountain atmosphere.
Economically and recreationally, Valtournenche is closely linked to the Cervinia-Zermatt ski domain. The town has its own ski area, which is fully connected by lifts to the slopes of Breuil-Cervinia and Zermatt in Switzerland, making it an excellent, quieter base for skiing the Matterhorn region.
