Fenis

Valle d'Aosta, Italy

About Fenis

Fénis is a peaceful village situated at an elevation of 541 metres on the southern bank of the Dora Baltea river, in the central Aosta Valley. The village lies on a gentle, sunny slope surrounded by meadows and chestnut forests, with the rugged peaks of the Clavalité Valley rising to the south.

Fénis is world-famous for Castello di Fénis (Fénis Castle), one of the most spectacular and best-preserved medieval castles in Italy. Unlike many other castles in the region, Fénis Castle was not built for military defense on a high cliff, but rather as a prestigious residential palace for the noble Challant family. It is characterized by its double boundary walls, numerous towers, crenellated battlements, and a beautiful inner courtyard.

While the castle is the main draw for tourists, the village itself has maintained a quiet, rural character. It is an excellent base for exploring the central valley and the hiking trails of the Clavalité Valley.
