Cogne
Valle d'Aosta, Italy
About Cogne
Cogne is a beautiful alpine town situated at an elevation of 1,534 metres in the southern Aosta Valley. It lies in a wide, sunny basin at the confluence of several valleys, dominated by the majestic peaks of the Gran Paradiso massif (4,061 m). Cogne is the main gateway to the Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso (Gran Paradiso National Park), Italy's oldest national park.
Historically, Cogne was an isolated farming community and later a mining town, with rich magnetite iron mines operating until 1979. Today, the town has transitioned into a premier destination for sustainable tourism. It is a member of the "Alpine Pearls" association, promoting eco-friendly travel and preserving its pristine natural environment.
Unlike many busy alpine resorts, Cogne has retained its authentic mountain character, characterized by traditional stone-and-wood houses and vast alpine meadows. It is world-famous for its cross-country skiing trails in winter and its extensive hiking network in summer.
