Why visit Livorno?

Livorno is a port city on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany, home to the third-largest port on that coast after Genoa and Naples. Upper-class travellers heading to Rome in the days of the Grand Tour would often go by sea to "Leghorn" (the old English name for Livorno) from Marseilles or Genoa. This explains in large part the presence of a substantial English cemetery in the town. Unlike most historic Tuscan cities, Livorno was largely built from the 16th century onward as a planned port city under the Medici, and its centre is threaded with canals in a district still known as "Venezia Nuova" (New Venice).
