Why visit Moncalieri?
Moncalieri is a historic town situated in the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. Located just 8 km south of Turin's city centre, it sits at the foot of the scenic Collina Torinese (Turin Hills) and along the banks of the Po River. Moncalieri is best known for its grand royal castle, which stands on a hill overlooking the town and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.
The town was founded in 1228 by inhabitants of Testona (now a hamlet of Moncalieri) who sought refuge on the hill from the frequent attacks of the Astigiani. It grew quickly due to its strategic position controlling a major bridge over the Po River. The town is crowned by its magnificent castle, originally built as a fortress in the 12th century and later expanded into a royal residence by the House of Savoy. The historic centre of Moncalieri remains well-preserved, developing around the hilltop Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, about 50 metres above the modern residential and industrial plains.
The climate in Moncalieri is temperate-continental, characterized by warm summers and cool, damp winters. The best time to visit is during spring and autumn (April to June and September to October) when the weather is ideal for walking through the medieval streets and exploring the surrounding green hills. The layout of the historic centre is defined by three main axes crossing the hill: Via San Martino (connecting the railway station to the main square), Via Alfieri, and Via Real Collegio.
