Gradara
Marche, Italy
Why visit Gradara?
Gradara is a small hilltop town in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, close to the border with Emilia-Romagna, built around a well-preserved medieval fortress ringed by roughly 800 metres of double defensive walls. The oldest part of the castle, the keep (Mastio), dates from the late 12th century; the Malatesta family of Rimini took control in 1295 and expanded it into a square castle with corner towers, a drawbridge, and a moat. The castle later passed to the Sforza of Pesaro, then to Cesare Borgia and the della Rovere dukes, before eventually entering Italian state ownership. Gradara is best known as the legendary setting of the doomed love affair between Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, killed here in 1289 and immortalized by Dante in Canto V of the Inferno. The fortress is one of the most-visited monuments in the Marche, and the walled village around it — with its steep lanes and artisan shops — is listed among "I Borghi più belli d'Italia" (the most beautiful villages of Italy).

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
Gradara has no railway station of its own; the nearest is Cattolica–San Giovanni–Gabicce on the Adriatic coastal line, about 6 km away, from which local Adriabus services run inland to Gradara. By car, exit the A14 motorway at Cattolica and follow the SS16 towards Pesaro, then the signs for Gradara.
The walled village is small and best explored on foot; cars are left outside the walls.
What are the things to do?
The Rocca di Gradara (Gradara Castle) is the town's centrepiece: a 12th-century keep expanded by the Malatesta family into a square castle with corner towers, drawbridge, and moat, all enclosed within roughly 800 metres of double defensive walls. It is traditionally identified as the setting of the Paolo and Francesca story told in Dante's Inferno. The walled historic village around the castle, with its narrow lanes and small artisan shops, is itself part of the visitor experience and is recognized as one of "I Borghi più belli d'Italia."
