Levanto
Liguria, Italy
Why visit Levanto?
Levanto is a coastal town in eastern Liguria, situated in a wide crescent bay at the northern edge of the Cinque Terre. Historically a maritime trading port under the Republic of Genoa, it features a broad sand-and-pebble beach, in contrast to the steep rocky coves of the neighboring Cinque Terre villages. Travelers frequently select Levanto as a base for exploring the region because it sits on the direct rail line while providing flatter ground, wider streets, and lower accommodation costs.
The historic center preserves medieval stone architecture, including 13th-century structures, painted Ligurian buildings, and a seafront fortress constructed in the 16th century. Beyond the shoreline, terraced hills with olive trees and grapevines rise toward inland ridges, connecting the town to regional hiking trails.
Levanto experiences a Mediterranean climate shaped by the Ligurian Sea. Summers are warm and sunny with average high temperatures between 26°C and 30°C (79°F–86°F) and low rainfall in July. Winters are cool and damp, with daily averages from 6°C to 12°C (43°F–54°F). Late autumn, particularly November, brings the heaviest rainfall. Water temperatures peak between 23°C and 25°C (73°F–77°F) from July through September.
