About Al-Hindiya

Al-Hindiya (Arabic: الهندية) is a city in Karbalā' Governorate, central Iraq, located on the Euphrates River about 15 km east of the holy city of Karbala. Its name means "the Indian," a reference to the Indian community that once settled here. Al-Hindiya is an agricultural market town surrounded by date palm groves, citrus orchards, and vegetable farms. It is also known for the Hindiya Barrage, a major irrigation dam on the Euphrates. The city has a mixed Shia Muslim population and benefits from proximity to Karbala's pilgrimage economy. Summers exceed 45°C; the best time to visit is November–March.
