About Abu Ghraib

Abu Ghraib (Arabic: أبو غريب) is a town in Baghdad Governorate, western Iraq, about 30 km west of central Baghdad. The town is best known internationally for the Abu Ghraib prison complex, which became notorious during the Iraq War. Beyond this, Abu Ghraib is a working-class agricultural and industrial suburb, with market gardens, date palms, and small factories. The Euphrates River flows nearby to the west. The climate is the typical Baghdad-region arid: extremely hot summers (45°C+), mild winters. November–March is the recommended travel period.
