About Rayen
Rayen is a historic town 100 km south-east of Kerman, famous for the Arg-e Rayen, an adobe citadel that rivals Bam's in size and state of preservation. Built on a rocky outcrop with walls up to 10 m tall, the citadel was inhabited until the early 19th century and is remarkably intact. The town sits at 2,200 m elevation on the slopes of Mount Hezar, giving it a cooler climate than much of Kerman Province.

By Car
Rayen is a straightforward 1.5-hour drive south-east of Kerman on a paved road. The road continues toward Mahan if approached from a different route.
Rayen is small and walkable. The citadel is on the southern edge of town, a 10-minute walk from the bus drop-off point or main square.
Things to do
Arg-e Rayen: A magnificent Sassanid-era mud-brick fortress with 15 towers, a governor's quarters, bathhouses, stables, and a wind tower (badgir). Much less crowded than Bam's citadel, it offers a more atmospheric experience. Restoration has preserved the structure without over-commercialising it.
Hazrateh Mountain (Mount Hezar): The highest peak in Kerman Province (4,500 m), visible from Rayen. On clear days, the snow-capped summit dominates the view.
Explore the Arg-e Rayen in detail — climb the ramparts for panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
Visit the small workshop inside the citadel where local craftswomen weave traditional Termeh textiles.
Hike or drive into the foothills of Mount Hezar.
