How do you get there?

The most practical access is via air DPS car 1h. Local transport (bemos, ojek, taxis) connects the airport or ferry terminal to the town centre. For remote areas, pre-arranged transport or guided tours are strongly recommended.

Transport within the area depends on the destination's size. In towns and cities, bemos (minibuses), ojek (motorcycle taxis), and becak (tricycle rickshaws) are the standard options. For islands and natural areas, boats, chartered vehicles, or walking with a local guide are the norm.

What are the things to do?

The main attractions in the area include natural landmarks, cultural sites, and local communities. The most notable sights are focused around Monkey Forest — the highlight of any visit.

Popular activities include exploring the main sights on foot or by boat, guided cultural tours, photography, trekking, and interacting with local communities. Water-based activities such as snorkelling, diving, and boat trips are excellent in coastal areas.

Where to eat?

The local cuisine centres on fresh seafood, rice, sago, and vegetables. Grilled fish (ikan bakar), nasi campur, and local sambals are staples. In more developed tourist areas, Western and international dining options are available.

Where to drink?

Fresh coconut water, local coffee (kopi), and Bintang beer are widely available. Tap water is not safe to drink — stick to bottled or filtered water. Traditional palm toddy (arak/sopi) is produced locally.

Accommodation options range from budget losmen (basic guesthouses) and homestays to mid-range hotels, with upscale resorts available in popular tourist areas. In remote areas, facilities are simple and booking ahead is advisable.

What should you buy?

Local markets sell handicrafts, traditional textiles, and regional produce. Ikat weaving, woodcarvings, and local spices are common souvenirs from eastern Indonesia. Bargaining is expected at traditional markets.
