Keibul Lamjao National Park
Manipur, India
Why visit Keibul Lamjao National Park?
Keibul Lamjao National Park (Meitei: Keibul Lamjao Leipaakki Lampaak) is the only floating national park on earth. It sits on the southeastern edge of Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in northeast India, in the bowl-shaped Imphal Valley of Manipur. The park's signature landscape is the phumdi — thick mats of decomposing and living vegetation, soil and organic matter that float on the lake, firm enough in places to walk on slowly and dense enough to act as a natural life-raft for anyone who slips into the water.
Keibul Lamjao exists for one animal above all: the Sangai (Cervus eldi eldi), the brow-antlered "dancing deer" of Manipur, found in the wild nowhere else. Watching the Sangai pick its way delicately across the springy phumdi gave rise to the "dancing" name. First protected as a wildlife sanctuary in 1966 and declared a national park in 1977, it is one of India's oldest parks and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list since 2016. Alongside the Sangai the park supports hog deer, wild boar, otters, civets, jungle cat, sambar, and a rich birdlife including migratory cranes and ducks. The park's expansion has, however, displaced some local fishing families — a sensitive social backdrop visitors should be aware of.
The climate is temperate but with real extremes: hot, humid summers (April–June, up to about 34 °C) and cold nights in winter (November–January, dipping near freezing). The best time to visit is the cool, dry winter, when wildlife is easiest to spot and migratory birds are present; aim for early morning, midday or late afternoon, when the Sangai come out to graze on the phumdi.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest airport is Imphal International Airport (IATA: IMF), about 53 km north of the park. Imphal has regular flights to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Agartala and Aizawl. From the airport, hire a taxi or pick up a shared cab toward Moirang and on to the park; allow roughly 1.5–2 hours by road. Booking a private cab makes the wildlife-watching timing (early morning starts) far easier.
By Car / Road
Keibul Lamjao is easily reached by road. The lakeside town of Moirang is only about 10 km away, Imphal about 53 km (1.5–2 hr), and Guwahati roughly 522 km. The route from Imphal runs south along a reasonably maintained valley highway. Shared taxis and minivans run between Imphal and Moirang; from Moirang take a local taxi or arrange transport to the park gate. Adventure operators in Manipur also run guided motorcycle tours to the park, solo or in groups.
Inside and around the park you get around chiefly by boat and on foot. Hired or private taxis serve the road approach and the watchtower areas. On the water, both motorboats and traditional oar/rowing boats are available, and kayaking is possible — gliding among the water plants and phumdi is the classic way to experience the park. You can also walk carefully across the firmer phumdi, though the ground flexes underfoot. There are no autorickshaws or ride-hailing apps here; arrange a boat and a local guide at the entrance or through your lodge in Moirang or on Sendra/Thanga islands.
What are the things to do?
- Sangai (brow-antlered deer) — the whole reason the park exists. The endangered "dancing deer" graze on the floating phumdi, most visible in early morning, around midday and late afternoon. Move quietly and bring binoculars.
- Phumdi (floating islands) — the park's defining landscape: vast mats of floating vegetation that you can boat among and, with care, walk on.
- Watchtowers — elevated platforms within the park offer the best vantage for scanning the phumdi for Sangai and other wildlife.
- Birdlife — herons, kingfishers, drongos, mynas, spotbill duck, blue-winged teal, ruddy shelduck and seasonal migratory cranes; winter brings the most variety.
- Loktak Lake — the broad lake the park floats on, with its iconic ring-shaped fishing phumdi, best appreciated from a boat or from the Sendra hilltop nearby.
Most park animals are not used to people, so keep noise to a minimum to coax wildlife out from behind the tall grasses.
- Boating — take a motorboat or rowing-boat ride through the phumdi for up-close encounters with the Sangai; kayaking offers a quieter, self-paced alternative.
- Wildlife watching from watchtowers — settle in with binoculars at dawn or late afternoon for the best sightings.
- Taxi tour — explore wider areas of the park to look for hog deer, wild boar, civet, otter, jungle cat and sambar.
- Birdwatching and photography — the mix of resident and migratory birds makes the park a strong destination for ornithologists and photographers.
- Camping — permitted within designated parts of the park (see the Sleep section).

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
There are some canteens in and around the park, and lodges run their own kitchens; food can be a little pricier here than in town, so consider stocking up beforehand. The cuisine is firmly local Meitei.
- Meitei Chakluk ("a plate of food") — a complete thali-style spread of rice, fish, meat, soups and salads on one plate; some lodges serve the side dishes in separate bowls.
- Singju — a spicy mixed salad of shredded vegetables and herbs bound with chilli; multi-layered in flavour and usually very hot.
- Fish dishes — Loktak Lake fish features heavily in local cooking, from light curries to fermented-fish preparations.
Vegetarian travellers can usually arrange rice with vegetable dishes, but fermented fish is a near-universal seasoning — state dietary needs clearly when ordering.
Where to drink?
There is no liquor shop inside the park — in keeping with Manipur's restrictions on alcohol sales — though chilled bottled soft drinks are available. The everyday drink is hot tea. Treat lake and tap water as unsafe to drink: carry sealed bottled water, and bring enough for the day since shops inside the park are scarce.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
- Budget: Camping is permitted within designated areas of the park (some zones are restricted); arrange permission and gear locally or through an adventure operator. Simple guesthouses can also be found in nearby Moirang.
- Mid-range: The most atmospheric option is to stay nearby on Sendra Island or in the lake village of Thanga, where lakeside lodges, resorts and floating homestays look out over Loktak.
- Upscale / heritage: There are no upscale or heritage hotels at the park itself; higher-tier hotels are in Imphal, about 53 km away.
What should you buy?
Shops are concentrated near the park entrance gate, where you can pick up handloom and handicraft products and a range of local snacks and eatables. Inside the park itself there are very few shops, so buy essentials — water, snacks, supplies — before you enter. Prices are generally modest; bargaining is light and not really expected for everyday goods.
Where to go next?

- Moirang (~10 km) — historic town with the INA (Indian National Army) memorial complex and museum.
