Why visit Eluru?

Eluru is a small, colourful city in central Andhra Pradesh, serving as the headquarters of the West Godavari district. The city is known for its pedestrian-friendly roads, vibrant market areas, and proximity to the Kolleru Lake bird sanctuary. Its economy is driven by agriculture, jute milling, and trade.

The climate is tropical, with hot summers (March–June), a heavy monsoon season (June–September), and pleasant winters (November–February). The best time to visit is between November and February. The city is divided into neighbourhoods including R.R. Pet (the commercial hub), 1 Town (the old city), N.R. Pet, and Sanivarapupeta.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Vijayawada (VGA IATA), less than an hour away by bus. Taxis and APSRTC buses connect the airport to Eluru.

By Train

Eluru railway station (EE) is on the Howrah–Chennai main line and has a halt from almost every train passing through. Local trains connect Eluru to Rajahmundry and Vijayawada.

By Car / Road

Eluru is well-connected by road to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Vijayawada (65 km), and Rajahmundry. APSRTC buses run long-distance services; private buses also operate within the region. Parking for cars can be tight in central areas.

Almost all locations in the city are accessible on foot—most roads have footpaths. Over 10,000 autorickshaws are registered in the city and are the most common transport mode. Bus services operate from the New and Old bus stations. Motorbikes and bicycles are good options for navigating busy areas.

What are the things to do?

  • Kolleru Bird Sanctuary – One of the largest freshwater lakes in India, a haven for migratory birds (best visited November–February).
  • Eluru Buddha Park – Features a 74-ft statue of Abhaya Buddha in a pond.
  • Brundavan Park – A recreational park with walking track in Pathebad.
  • Holy Land – One of only two such sites in India, located 7 km from the city centre.
  • DwarakaTirumala (Chinna Tirupathi) – 40 km from Eluru, a hill temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara.
  • Guntupalli Buddhist Monuments – 40 km away, ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves.

Visit the Kolleru Bird Sanctuary for birdwatching and boat rides. Explore the Sunday shopping fest at R.R. Pet Market and 1 Town Fish Market. Visit the DwarakaTirumala temple. The Guntupalli Caves offer a glimpse into ancient Buddhist architecture.

The main shopping areas are R.R. Pet (Central Plaza, CMR Shopping Mall, Trinath Fashions, R9000) and 1 Town (Main Bazar, Chandana Brothers). The Sunday Market on R.R. Pet Main Road is popular for bargain shopping.
