Fertod

Győr-Moson-Sopron, Hungary

About Fertod

Fertőd is a small village in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, home to one of Hungary's most magnificent architectural treasures — the Esterházy Palace. The village occupies a flat, open landscape on the southern edge of the Fertő-Hanság basin, near the shores of Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See). For centuries, this was the rural seat of the powerful Esterházy family, one of the wealthiest noble houses in Hungarian history. The palace, built in the 1760s under Prince Miklós "the Magnificent" Esterházy, was designed as a Hungarian rival to Versailles and served as a summer residence where Joseph Haydn worked as the court composer. Today, Fertőd is a quiet agricultural village, but the palace draws visitors from across the region.
