Sarospatak

Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Hungary

About Sarospatak

Sárospatak is a historic town of about 12,000 people in the northern Zemplén region of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, 25 km northeast of Tokaj and close to the Slovak border. The town is dominated by the formidable Rákóczi Castle (Sárospataki Vár), a 13th-century fortress expanded in the 16th–17th centuries that was the seat of the powerful Rákóczi family — major figures in the Hungarian struggle against Habsburg rule. Sárospatak is also a historic centre of Reformed (Calvinist) learning, with one of Hungary's most important Reformed Colleges (founded 1531), whose library, botanical garden, and educational traditions have shaped Hungarian Protestantism. The town has a quiet, scholarly atmosphere and a well-preserved historic centre.

Things to do

  • Reformed College (Sárospataki Református Kollégium) — One of Hungary's most historic schools. The library contains over 100,000 volumes including manuscripts and incunabula. The botanical garden (Füvészkert) behind the college is a peaceful spot.

  • Main Square (Kossuth tér) — An elongated square lined with Baroque and Neoclassical houses, anchored by the Reformed church.

  • Tour the castle's Rákóczi exhibition, documenting the family's role in Hungarian history.

  • Visit the library of the Reformed College — access is limited but guided tours are available in summer.
