Estanzuela

Zacapa, Guatemala

About Estanzuela

Estanzuela is a small town in Guatemala's Zacapa department, located just a few kilometres west of the departmental capital along the main highway. The town has a population of around 10,000 and is known for its natural history museum — the Museo de Historia Natural de Estanzuela — which houses geological, paleontological, and archaeological collections from the Motagua valley. The museum, though modest in size, is one of the more notable cultural institutions in Guatemala's eastern lowlands.

Estanzuela sits in a slightly elevated position relative to the Motagua valley floor, giving it a marginally more comfortable microclimate than Zacapa city. The surrounding area is characterised by dry tropical vegetation and agricultural land. The town has a quiet, unhurried atmosphere and serves primarily as a residential and agricultural community.

Things to do

  • Museo de Historia Natural de Estanzuela — the town's main attraction; geological specimens, fossils, paleontological finds from the Motagua valley, and archaeological artefacts; modest admission fee; allow 1–2 hours

  • Botanical garden — a small garden adjacent to or near the museum showcasing the region's dry tropical flora

  • Town centre — a pleasant, quiet Guatemalan provincial town with a central park and church
