Why visit Santa Maria de Jesus?

Santa Maria de Jesus is a small Kaqchikel Maya town of roughly 18,000 people located about 9 km south of Antigua Guatemala, perched on the lower slopes of Volcan de Agua at approximately 1,650 metres elevation. It is the closest settlement to the main hiking trailhead for Volcan de Agua (3,760 m), making it a starting point for the challenging ascent.

The town has a strong indigenous identity, with Kaqchikel Maya culture, language, and traditional dress widely practised. The climate is mild, with temperatures averaging 18–24°C. Santa Maria de Jesus is not a tourist town but welcomes hikers and those interested in authentic highland culture.

How do you get there?

By Plane

La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City is approximately 50 km east. Travel to Antigua first (1 hour), then continue south to Santa Maria de Jesus.

By Car / Road

Santa Maria de Jesus is about 20 minutes south of Antigua Guatemala via a winding road that climbs the lower slopes of Volcan de Agua. Chicken buses from Antigua serve the town for Q5. From Guatemala City, the drive takes about 1.5 hours via Antigua.

The town is compact but hilly due to its mountainside location. Walking is the primary mode of transport within town. The volcano trailhead is accessible on foot from the town centre.

What are the things to do?

  • Volcan de Agua trailhead — the starting point for the hike to the 3,760-metre summit, offering dramatic views of the volcanic cone

  • Central plaza and parish church — a well-maintained square with a colonial-era church, surrounded by traditional buildings

  • Traditional Kaqchikel community — the town is one of the best-preserved indigenous communities near Antigua, with traditional dress, weaving, and customs on display in daily life

  • Hike Volcan de Agua — the main attraction; the trail is steep and challenging (6–8 hours round trip). A local guide is strongly recommended (arrange at the trailhead or through the municipal office; expect Q100–200). Start early morning for the best conditions.

  • Visit the town market — a small but authentic local market selling produce and textiles

  • Observe Kaqchikel culture — watch weavers at work, observe traditional dress, and experience the rhythms of indigenous highland life
