Ciudad Vieja

Sacatepéquez, Guatemala

Why visit Ciudad Vieja?

Ciudad Vieja is a small town of approximately 30,000 people located about 5 km south of Antigua Guatemala in Sacatepéquez department. It holds immense historical significance as the site of Guatemala's second capital, Santiago de los Caballeros, founded in 1527 before the capital was moved to what is now Antigua Guatemala after devastating floods and mudflows from Volcan de Agua in 1541. The town sits at roughly 1,550 metres elevation in the central highlands.

Today Ciudad Vieja is a quiet, predominantly Kaqchikel Maya community with a well-preserved colonial church and a relaxed atmosphere. The climate is mild year-round, with temperatures averaging 18–25°C. The rainy season (May–October) brings afternoon showers, while the dry season (November–April) is warm and sunny.

The town is of interest to history enthusiasts and those exploring the Antigua area. It makes for an easy half-day trip from Antigua and offers a less touristy alternative to its famous neighbour.

What are the things to do?

  • Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepcion — the town's impressive colonial-era parish church, built on the foundations of structures dating to the 16th century. The ornate Baroque facade is one of the finest in the region.

  • Ruins of the second capital — remnants of the original Santiago de los Caballeros settlement can be found near the church and in surrounding areas, including old foundations and drainage channels.

  • Central plaza — a pleasant tree-lined square surrounded by colonial-era buildings, offering a window into traditional highland Guatemalan life.

  • Explore the historical sites — walk the town and imagine the first Spanish capital, learning about the catastrophic 1541 mudflow that destroyed it

  • Visit during Semana Santa — Ciudad Vieja's Holy Week processions feature elaborate alfombras (carpeted streets) and religious processions, though smaller in scale than Antigua's

  • Hike Volcan de Agua — the trailhead for the volcano is accessible from the area (guide recommended)

  • Day trip to Antigua Guatemala — just 10 minutes away by bus, with world-class colonial architecture, restaurants, and cultural offerings
