Santo Domingo Xenacoj is a small Kaqchikel Maya village of roughly 10,000 people located about 12 km west of Antigua Guatemala in Sacatepéquez department. Situated at approximately 1,900 metres elevation, it is a quiet, predominantly indigenous community known for its traditional textile production and its well-preserved colonial church.

The climate is cool and pleasant, with temperatures averaging 15–22°C. The village retains a strong sense of Kaqchikel identity, with traditional dress commonly worn and Kaqchikel language widely spoken alongside Spanish. How do you get there?

By Plane

La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City is approximately 55 km east. From the airport, travel to Antigua (1 hour), then continue west to Santo Domingo Xenacoj.

By Car / Road

Santo Domingo Xenacoj is accessible via local roads from San Lucas Sacatepéquez (about 5 km) or from the CA-1 highway. From Antigua Guatemala, the drive takes about 25–30 minutes. Chicken buses from Antigua or San Lucas serve the village, though service may be less frequent than along the main highway. From Guatemala City, the drive is about 1.5–2 hours.

The village is small and easily walkable. There is no formal local transit. Tuk-tuks may be available from San Lucas Sacatepéquez.

Where to eat?

A few small comedores near the plaza serve basic Guatemalan meals: desayuno for Q10–20, almuerzo for Q15–25. Options are very limited. For more variety, San Lucas Sacatepéquez or Antigua have wider selections.

Where to drink?

Bottled water is recommended. Shops sell soft drinks and beer. Traditional drinks like atol are available from market vendors, especially in the morning.

  • Budget: Very limited. A basic hospedaje may be available for Q40–80 per night. Most visitors stay in Antigua.
  • Mid-range / Upscale: None in the village. Antigua Guatemala (25–30 minutes) has full options.

What should you buy?

Local weavers sell handmade textiles, including huipiles, table runners, and scarves. Prices are generally lower than in Antigua's tourist shops. Small shops sell basic provisions and household goods.
