About Purulha

Purulhá (also written Purulha) is a small town of approximately 8,000 inhabitants in eastern Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, situated at around 1,300 metres elevation on the slopes of the Sierra de las Minas. The town serves as the gateway to the Biotopo del Quetzal Mario Dary Rivera, one of Guatemala's most important cloud-forest reserves and a prime habitat for the resplendent Quetzal — the country's national bird and a symbol of Maya spiritual significance.

Purulhá's economy is based on agriculture (coffee, cardamom, corn) and, increasingly, ecotourism linked to the biotopo. The surrounding landscape transitions rapidly from dry lowland scrub to dense cloud forest as elevation rises, creating a dramatic ecological gradient. The climate is cooler and wetter than Salamá, with frequent mist and rain in the cloud-forest zone.

The town itself is small and unremarkable, but its proximity to the biotopo — just 12 km north on a paved road — makes it a practical base for birdwatchers and hikers. Very few tourists stay overnight in Purulhá itself; most visit as a day trip from Salamá or Cobán.

Purulhá is a small town, easily navigable on foot. To reach the Biotopo del Quetzal (12 km north), you can take a chicken bus, hire a tuk-tuk (Q20–30), or arrange a ride with your accommodation. Within the biotopo, trails are well-marked and walked on foot. A local guide is recommended for birdwatching and can be arranged at the biotopo entrance or through your hotel.

Things to do

  • Biotopo del Quetzal Mario Dary Rivera — a 1,053-hectare cloud-forest reserve protecting habitat for the resplendent Quetzal, along with hundreds of other bird species, orchids, bromeliads, and tree ferns. Two marked trails (Los Helechos, 1.5 km, and Los Musgos, 2.5 km) wind through the forest. Entrance fee Q50 for foreign visitors.

  • Cloud forest canopy — the biotopo's forest canopy reaches 30–40 metres and is draped in mosses, ferns, and epiphytes, creating an otherworldly atmosphere, especially in morning mist

  • Coffee and cardamom farms — several small farms in the hills around Purulhá offer informal visits where you can see shade-grown coffee and cardamom cultivation

  • Sierra de las Minas foothills — the mountains above Purulhá harbour waterfalls, swimming holes, and increasingly rare montane forest

  • Quetzal spotting — the biotopo's primary attraction; the best months are March–June (breeding season), when males display their long tail feathers. Hire a guide at the entrance for the best chances (Q100–200 for a half-day)

  • Cloud forest hiking — walk the biotopo's two trails through moss-draped forest, crossing streams and climbing to viewpoints

  • Birdwatching — beyond the Quetzal, the biotopo harbours toucans, motmots, hummingbirds, trogons, and hundreds of other species; serious birders should plan 2–3 days

  • Coffee farm visits — arrange a visit to a local finca (farm) to learn about shade-grown coffee production and sample fresh-roasted beans

  • Photography — the cloud forest offers exceptional macro photography opportunities (orchids, ferns, insects) and dramatic landscape shots in morning mist
