Sikinos

Why visit Sikinos?
Sikinos is a quiet island in the southern Cyclades, situated between Ios and Folegandros. Covering roughly 41 square kilometres with a permanent population of approximately 260 residents, it remains one of the least commercialised islands in the Aegean archipelago. There are no large resort developments, organized package tours, or late-night clubs. Travelers visit for open hiking paths, secluded swimming coves, traditional Cycladic architecture, and an unhurried pace of daily life.
In antiquity, the island was known as Oenoe (meaning "island of wine") due to its terraced vineyards. Its history is marked by the Monument of Episkopi, a 3rd-century AD Roman mausoleum converted into a Byzantine church in the Middle Ages. Sikinos has two primary settlements: the port village of Alopronia at sea level, and Chora—divided into the fortified medieval quarter of Kastro and the adjacent residential quarter of Chorio—situated on the ridge 3.5 kilometres inland from the harbour.
The island experiences a dry Mediterranean climate with sunny, warm summers and mild, windy winters. Summer temperatures typically range from 27°C to 32°C, moderated by the northerly Meltemi winds that blow across the Aegean from late June through August. Winters bring moderate conditions, with daytime highs around 12°C to 16°C and periodic rainfall.

By Air
No air service operates directly to Sikinos. The nearest airport is Santorini National Airport (JTR), located approximately 35 km southeast. Santorini receives scheduled flights from Athens (ATH) year-round on Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, and Sky Express (45 minutes flight time), as well as direct seasonal flights from major European cities on airlines such as British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair, and Lufthansa. From Santorini Airport, take a local bus (€2.00 / $2.20 USD) or taxi (€25–€35 / $27–$38 USD) to Athinios Port (20 minutes), then take a connecting ferry to Sikinos (35 minutes to 2 hours depending on vessel type).
Alternatively, fly into Athens International Airport (ATH), take Metro Line 3 (€9.00 / $9.80 USD, 60 minutes) or the X96 express bus (€5.50 / $6.00 USD, 90 minutes) directly to Piraeus Port, and catch a ferry to Sikinos.
By Train
No train service. Sikinos is an island in the Aegean Sea with no railway infrastructure. Mainland rail lines operated by Hellenic Train serve Athens and central Greece but do not extend to the Cyclades.
By Bus
No intercity buses travel directly to Sikinos across the sea. On the mainland, KTEL Attikis buses run from central Athens (Pedion tou Areos) to Lavrio Port (2 hours, €5.80 / $6.30 USD), where subsidized regional ferries (such as Saos Ferries) connect weekly with Sikinos. For Piraeus Port, standard Athens urban transit buses (OASA line 040 from Syntagma, €1.20 / $1.30 USD, 50 minutes) or airport express line X96 provide direct transfers to the ferry terminals.
By Car
Direct driving to Sikinos is not possible across open water. However, conventional vehicle ferries operated by Blue Star Ferries and Zante Ferries allow cars and motorcycles to be transported from Piraeus Port or neighbouring Cycladic islands to Alopronia Port. From central Athens, drive south along Leoforos Athinon-Piraeus (10 km, 20–30 minutes) to reach the Piraeus vehicle boarding gates. On Sikinos, a single paved main road runs 3.5 km from Alopronia up to Chora, with paved and dirt extensions continuing toward Episkopi (4 km) and Agios Georgios beach (5 km).
By Ferry
Ferries are the primary transport method to Sikinos, docking at Alopronia Port:
From Piraeus (Athens): Conventional car ferries (Blue Star Ferries, Zante Ferries) run 3–5 times weekly, taking 7.5 to 10 hours; deck passenger tickets cost €38–€48 ($41–$52 USD). High-speed seasonal catamarans (SeaJets) complete the trip in 4.5 to 5.5 hours; one-way tickets cost €70–€85 ($76–$92 USD).
From Santorini: High-speed catamarans take 35 to 50 minutes (€18–€45 / $20–$49 USD); conventional ferries take 1.5 to 2 hours (€8–€14 / $9–$15 USD).
From Ios: 25 to 40 minutes (€6–€18 / $6.50–$20 USD).
From Folegandros: 30 to 45 minutes (€5–€15 / $5.50–$16 USD).
From Naxos & Paros: 2 to 3.5 hours on regional lines such as the Artemis or Saos Ferries (€8–€30 / $9–$33 USD).
Public Bus: A municipal bus connects Alopronia Port with Chora (Kastro and Chorio) throughout the year, timed around scheduled ferry arrivals. During the summer months, extra routes run multiple times daily to Episkopi Monument, Manalis Winery, and Agios Georgios Beach. The one-way fare is €1.80 to €2.00 ($2.00–$2.20 USD), payable in cash to the driver. Schedules are posted at the bus shelter in Alopronia and at the entrance of Chora.
Scooter & Car Rental: A local rental agency operates in Alopronia providing 50cc–125cc scooters (€20–€35 / $22–$38 USD per day) and a small selection of compact manual cars (€35–€60 / $38–$65 USD per day). Advance booking is advisable for travel in July and August. The island's only petrol station is located on the road just outside Alopronia.
Walking & Hiking: Footpaths connect the primary villages, historical monuments, and coastal coves. Routes are signposted with painted trail markers and wooden signposts under the "Paths of Culture" network. Walking from Chora to Episkopi takes approximately 60 minutes on foot; the downhill stone path from Chora to Alopronia takes around 45 minutes.
Water Taxis & Excursion Boats: In July and August, small boats operate from Alopronia to transport visitors to remote swimming bays including Malta, Agios Panteleimonas, and Santorineika (€10–€15 / $11–$16 USD round trip).
Taxis: There is one private taxi based on the island. Arrange trips through your accommodation or call the driver using contact numbers listed at the port.
What are the things to do?

A multi-year conservation project completed in 2022 restored ancient inscriptions, classical cornices, and medieval frescoes, earning the European Heritage / Europa Nostra Award. Located 4 km southwest of Chora. Entry: free or nominal €2–€3 ($2.20–$3.30 USD) during official visiting hours.
Kastro (Chora): The 15th-century fortified settlement positioned on the edge of a 280-metre sea cliff. Outer stone residences originally served as defensive walls against pirate incursions. Narrow flagstone walkways pass whitewashed facades, vaulted archways, and the 18th-century Church of Pantanassa with its wooden iconostasis. Entry: free.
