About Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos (also known as Lepanto in Western sources) is a historic port town on the northern shore of the Gulf of Corinth, at the foot of Mount Rigani. It is famous for the 1571 Battle of Lepanto, one of the largest naval battles in European history, where the Holy League defeated the Ottoman fleet. The town's most distinctive feature is its beautiful Venetian harbour, enclosed by a massive stone breakwater with a castle on the hill above. Nafpaktos has a relaxed, authentic atmosphere, with a long pebble beach, seafood tavernas around the harbour, and a picturesque old town climbing the hillside beneath the fortress walls.
