Why visit Chrysoupoli?

Chrysoupoli (Χρυσούπολη) is a small town in the Kavala regional unit, located on the plain of the Nestos River Delta about 12 km inland from the Aegean coast. Its name means "Golden City," a reference to the fertile agricultural lands that surround it — famous for the production of corn, sunflowers, kiwi fruit, and asparagus. For travellers, Chrysoupoli's main significance is as the nearest town to the Nestos Delta, one of Greece's most important wetland ecosystems, and as a practical stop for trips to the delta or the nearby Nestos Gorge.

The town itself is unassuming but pleasant, with a central square, a lively market, and a relaxed, rural atmosphere. It has a good range of basic services — supermarkets, bakeries, and a few tavernas — making it a convenient base for nature activities. The climate is Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters.

What are the things to do?

  • Nestos River Delta — A vast wetland ecosystem of river channels, lagoons, and sandbars, home to over 300 bird species including flamingos, pelicans, herons, and cormorants. Boat tours and walking trails are available.

  • Nestos Gorge — A spectacular river canyon about 15 km north of Chrysoupoli, where the Nestos River has carved a deep gorge through the Rhodope Mountains. Rafting, kayaking, and hiking are popular activities.

  • Agios Nikolaos Church — The main church of Chrysoupoli, a modern structure with a striking dome.

  • Local Produce Market — The Saturday morning market is the best place for fresh local produce, especially the region's famous kiwi fruit and asparagus.

  • Boat tour of the Nestos Delta — The best way to explore the delta is by guided boat, navigating the narrow channels through the reed beds. Tours depart from the village of Keramoti or from the delta information centre.

  • Rafting on the Nestos — The Nestos Gorge offers excellent rafting in spring and early summer when the river runs high. Several operators in Chrysoupoli run trips.

  • Hiking in the Nestos Gorge — The well-marked trail system on both sides of the gorge offers spectacular views. The trail from the old Nestos bridge to the town of Toxotes is particularly beautiful.

  • Visit the Delta Observation Tower — A wooden observation tower overlooking the delta, accessible from the information centre. Great for birdwatching and photography.
