Why visit Drama?
Drama (Δράμα) is a city of striking contrasts at the foot of Mount Falakro, about 35 km north of Kavala. Known historically for its tobacco trade — which brought immense wealth in the early 20th century — Drama is today a charming, green city famous for its water: the Agia Varvara springs, city waterfalls, and abundant rivers have earned it the nickname "the city of waters." The old tobacco warehouses (kapnopothikes), built in eclectic early 20th-century styles, are among the most impressive industrial heritage buildings in Greece, and many have been repurposed as cultural spaces.
Surrounded by the forested slopes of Mount Falakro and the Pangaio range, Drama is an excellent base for outdoor activities. The city itself is relaxed and walkable, with elegant squares, a lively café culture, and a growing reputation for gastronomy. Drama's climate is Mediterranean with continental influences — summers are hot but less humid than on the coast, while winters are cold and snowy on the surrounding mountains, making the nearby Falakro ski resort popular.
