Volta Region stretches from the eastern shore of Lake Volta to the Togo border, encompassing a diverse landscape of mountains, waterfalls, rainforest, and lagoons. Its capital, Ho, is the cultural and commercial centre of the Ewe people — the dominant ethnic group in the region. The region was created from the former British Togoland trust territory after a 1956 plebiscite, giving it a unique colonial heritage distinct from the rest of Ghana.
For travellers, Volta Region offers some of Ghana's most dramatic scenery: the Akwapim-Togo Range rising from the lowlands, the twin Wli waterfalls cascading down forested cliffs, and the vast Keta Lagoon. Its villages are known for traditional textiles (kente), beads, and the friendly, laid-back Ewe culture.
When to Visit
The dry season from November to March is ideal for hiking and waterfall visits. The rains (April–October) make the region lush but can turn trails to mud. The Wli Waterfalls are most powerful between June and October. December is festival season across the region.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The Accra–Aflao highway (N1) runs along the southern coast, with Ho accessible via a well-paved road north from the junction at Akosombo. Trotros connect Ho to all district capitals. For Ghana's eastern border crossings, Aflao (Lomé) is the main gateway. The mountain roads to Amedzofe and Wli are winding and can be slow.

WhatsAppCuisine
Volta Region's cuisine is the land of fufu and abolo (a steamed corn bread). The region's lagoons and rivers provide abundant tilapia and catfish, often grilled or fried and served with banku. Akple (a maize- or cassava-based dough) served with pepper and fish is a daily staple. The Keta area is known for its dried and smoked fish. Palm wine is tapped throughout the region.
Culture & Festivals
Volta Region is the heartland of Ewe culture. Major festivals include the Hogbetsotso (November–December) in Anloga — a liberation festival commemorating the Ewe migration from Notsie in Togo — and the Asogli Yam Festival (September) in Ho. The Agotime Kente weaving tradition in Kpetoe is recognised across Ghana. The region's traditional music is characterised by the atsiagbekor and agbadza drumming styles.
