Eastern Region stretches from the forested Akuapem hills in the south to the Volta Lake shoreline in the east. Its capital, Koforidua, is a commercial city on the Accra–Kumasi road. The region's landscape is defined by the Akosombo Dam and the vast Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake by surface area in the world, along with the Akuapem Ridge — a chain of hills offering sweeping views toward Accra.
Eastern Region combines scenic highland beauty, colonial-era mountain retreats (Aburi, Akropong), and the industrial grandeur of the Akosombo hydroelectric project. It is also the heartland of the Akuapem and Akyem traditional areas, with a distinct cultural identity within Ghana's Akan world.
When to Visit
November to March offers the most comfortable weather, particularly in the hill towns of Aburi and Akropong which are noticeably cooler than the coast. The rainy seasons (April–July, September–October) bring lush greenery to the botanical gardens. The region's festivals, particularly the Odwira (September–October), draw large crowds.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Eastern Region is well connected. The Accra–Kumasi highway (N6) passes through Koforidua and Nkawkaw. A main road runs from Koforidua east to Akosombo and the Volta Lake. The Akuapem ridge (Aburi, Akropong, Larteh) is served by winding roads from Accra. Trotros and shared taxis link all major towns. The lake ports at Akosombo connect by ferry to communities across the lake.

The Eastern Region is known for its palm-wine production — the Akuapem ridge has countless palm-wine bars serving fresh, sweet-tasting sap. Fufu and palm-nut soup (abenkwan) is the local staple. Smoked fish from Lake Volta is widely used. Aburi's weekend restaurants draw visitors from Accra for grilled tilapia and banku.
Culture & Festivals
The Odwira Festival is the most important in the Eastern Region, particularly celebrated by the Akuapem people (September–October) — a purification and harvest festival with processions, drumming, and traditional oaths. The Akyem Abuakwa area observes the Ohum Festival (November). The Kwahu area celebrates Easter with a major paragliding event attracting tourists from across Ghana. The Wednesday bead market in Koforidua is a unique shopping experience.
